THELMA ALINE BURDEN CAMPBELL 1985

I was born August 22, 1914 at the home of my grandparents, Charles E, and Ella Tepkin, at 2012 Gentry Street in Houston, Texas. Later my Mother’s father moved to a house on Danna Lane.

A few years later my Daddy bought a herd of milk cows and started in the dairy business on Danna Lane.

At age 6 I went to Sikes School on Old East Montgomery Road, about 2 ½ or 3 miles from where we lived. At that time there were no school buses, so we walked to and from School. Schools at that time, the boys and girls were separated on the school grounds. Boys on one side of the yard and girls on the other side. Girls played jump rope and hop scotch. Boys played ball and marble games.

I learned to milk cows at an early age, so I helped on the dairy.

We then moved to a place on the other side of Yale Street, and had to drive the cows from Danna Lane to the new place. I was still going to Sikes School, so one of the men that worked on the dairy drove us to school. After school my Daddy would pick us up and then we would make the milk route, then go home. We stayed at this place less than a year and went back to Danna Lane. All of the milk cows had to be driven back to Danna Lane.

I was 9 years old when Ed Campbell came to work on the dairy during the summer months.

When they built Burbank School on Tidwell Street, we transferred from Sikes to Burbank School. We had to walk down East Montgomery to Lindale to catch the bus to Burbank School. Later we moved to the 1500 Berry Road home and continued going to Burbank School.

August 29, 1930 Ed and I married. We lived in a garage apartment in the 1500 block of Berry Road next to my parent’s home.

On August 30, 1931 Gene was born. In 1932 Ed and I built a house on Danna Lane. In 1936 we built a house at 1717 Berry Road. In less than 2 months Ed joined the Texas Highway Patrol and left for his training at Austin, Texas. Gene and I stayed at home on Berry Road.

After Ed finished his training, we moved to Tyler, Texas. I took sick with bronchitis. The doctor told us to move to West Texas. We moved to Lubbock where the dust storms made my condition worse. So Gene and I moved back to Houston and stayed with my parents on Berry Road. Ed got a transfer to Beaumont and Gene and I joined him there. My health improved. We lived in Beaumont for a year. Ed got a transfer back to Houston. Gene and I stayed in Beaumont for 2 months.

While Ed was working in Houston, he had our house remodeled into the home we have now.

I have always enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting and fishing was a big hobby of mine. After Ed retired we spent 2 years traveling the western states.

Later we just settled down and enjoyed our son, Joyce, the grand children and great grand children.

It has been a happy and wonderful life.
