Virginia Wallingford-Elliott WALLINGFORD- ELLIOTT Virginia "Charlie" "Nina" Marie Wallingford Elliott, of San Antonio, Texas, was born December 3, 1931 and passed away on October 19, 2012 at the age of 80. Virginia was born in Shanghai, China, to parents George Truitt Wallingford and Marie Ottilia Collaco. Her father enlisted in the Marines at the age of 15. Later, he met her mother in China where they were married. Virginia grew up in Shanghai and was there through the end of World War II during the Japanese occupation. After the war, her mother, along with Virginia and her brother, "Bobby", left Shanghai on October 13, 1945 on the SS Lavaca for San Francisco, and eventually arrived in Hempstead, Texas, home of George Wallingford's family. Her father, a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, was killed in action during the Retreats of Gandesa in 1938 and was buried on the battle field, but this was unknown to the family until 2002. Virginia, affectionately known as "Charlie" by her family and close friends when she was growing up, lived a short time in the Houston area and eventually moved to San Antonio where she spent the remainder of her life. Virginia was a voracious reader of all data about China and loved everything Chinese, especially Chinese Food. She loved life, spending time with family and friends and, in particular, riding in the car and enjoying the beautiful scenery, mainly in the Texas Hill Country. For seven and a half years, she fought a courageous battle with, and finally succumbed to, lung cancer. She and all of her family are extremely grateful to The Odyssey Hospice House in San Antonio, Texas, for their superior care during her last few days, as well as to her Oncologist, Dr. Arun Rao, and his staff. She was proceeded in death by her parents, George Truitt Wallingford and Marie Ottilia Collaco Wallingford; former husband, Jake S. Elliott; son-in-law, Joseph L.
