John W. Etheredge John W. Etheredge, 94, of Victoria, Texas, formerly of Waco, passed away April 30, 2013. There will be a visitation on Sunday, May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rosewood Funeral Chapel in Victoria, 3304 Mockingbird Lane, www.RosewoodFuneralChapel.com. The funeral will be Monday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at McWilliams Funeral Home in Hempstead, Texas, 706 Bremond St., www.McWilliamsFuneralHome.com. Interment will follow at the Hempstead Cemetery. John was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Weldon, Texas, the son of Mode B. and Ora Read Etheredge. He was a graduate of Sam Houston State University and served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946. During his service, he flew P-38s and was ultimately responsible for the air defense of Southern California. Upon leaving the military, John returned to Texas, taking on many roles and responsibilities over the years, including High School Principal, Chamber of Commerce management in several Texas cities, and Community Development Specialist for Brazos Electric Power Corp. in Waco. Retiring in 1980, he moved to Lake Livingston near Trinity, and immediately became involved in community activities including part-time Chamber Manager, member of the local hospital board, Chairman of the Christmas Basket Program, and organizer and later Chairman of the volunteer group that established and operated the Trinity Good Samaritan House. In 1983, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Lake Area National Bank, serving on the Board and as Chairman of the Loan Committee. He was a member of the Dorcas Wills Memorial Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Laverne Wallingford Etheredge of Victoria; six children, Iris "Suzi" Etheredge and Joe Etheredge of McGregor, Jimmy Etheredge of Waco, Mary Alice Etheredge of Houston, Linda Plate of Atascadero, Calif., and John Etheredge Jr. of Eugene, Ore.; and by two step-daughters, Ruth Ann Perkins of Fulshear, Texas, and Marilyn Hamilton of Victoria. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. John had requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Dorcas Wills Baptist Church, Box 112, Trinity, TX, 75862, or to the Student Loan Fund, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, 77341.
