from Bruce Robertson: The internet website for "POW Camps in Texas" provides sketchy information on this facility. It was originally constructed as a summer training camp for the 36th Infantry Division, Texas National Guard. During World War II, it was converted to a holding facility, primarily for German POW's. One account reports that POW's were used to lay water lines for the Officer's golf course and paid eighty cents per day, of which 2/3 went into a savings account and 1/3 could be used for buying soap, writing paper, etc. Other POW Camps, such as the Civil Air Station in Corpus Christi, used POW labor to assist local farmers. |
