William Stokes Dorris enlisted as Private at Galveston, Texas on
October 19, 1861 probably in the 9th (Nichols) Regiment, Texas
Infantry, C.S.A. and served until the unit's expiration of service
in April, 1862. He then joined as Private, Company E, Wauls Texas
Legion, C.S.A. and served with that unit until they were surrendered
to Union forces under the command of U. S. Grant at Vicksburg,
Mississippi on July 4, 1863. Dorris states that his first battle was
at Fort Pemberton, Mississippi on the Yazoo River and lasted for 14
days. While under seige at Vicksburg, he was wounded 3 times of which one
permanently dislocated his wrist. He was paroled with the rest of Wauls
Texas Legion on July 9, 1863 and returned to Texas. He subsequently
rejoined Wauls Texas Legion after it was re-organized and designated
Timmons Regiment, Texas Infantry, C.S.A.
William Stokes Dorris took the Oath of Allegience, along with his
younger brother George Harrington Dorris, at Columbus, Colorado County,
Texas on July 8, 1865.
