Letter from Christobel Nation Tunnington to Phyllis Prouse Taylor, 1 July 1981: Cuffie described Noel's funeral. It had been bitterly cold and wet when Cuffie and John left Waikanae, but not in Palmerston North. It was a very peaceful service, with no hymns. Readings from the Bible and Tom (believed to be Tom Henson) spoke nicely of Noel, mainly about his war service and his work for the sick. There were RSA poppies and John (Cuffie's husband) was first to lay his on the casket. The only flowers were on the casket, mostly pink carnations. Cuffie said that Sheila has been very brave and noble over the whole thing, and Cuffie does admire her. Cuffie went out to the farm after, and as Cuffie "drove the teapot" she didn't get too much chance to talk with family. |
