From http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7942165/person/-740112035/story Marcelle, Evelyn's sister and reporter of this story, can't remember if Gardner was in a teaching college or just taking some sort of class but he was in some kind of educational setting at the time he met Evelyn. Evelyn and some friends were out dancing at a place way off 39th street in Port Arthur, Texas called The Black Cat. The band playing had a trumpet player......Gardner Moore. It is how the fellows made money while in school. Gardner was hooked from just seeing Evelyn out on the dance floor. He left Port Arthur for a very, very short time and came back to stay. Times were hard so the he kept playing in the band to make money. They toured around the country. Marcelle says little Phil would be put to sleep in drawers in hotel rooms. |
