12 December 2013 Auntie June (June Taylor Wills) just told Averil Jarlov the story of Phyllis - June's mother, Averil's grandmother - cutting bottles. When times were bad and there weren't enough jars for canning and preserves, she would wind a piece of wool around a bottle and soak it with meths. After lighting it and letting it burn a short while, she would put the bottle into cold water - and it would snap off. They used sandpaper to smooth the edges. A glue was made from flour and water to fix a piece of white paper over the preserves. They had to scrounge even for the white paper - June said that often they would get a piece wrapped around a loaf of bread - a 'barracuda' loaf - if they bought any (they usually made their own). |
