Letter from Phyllis Prouse Taylor to Christobel Nation Tunnington, 22 May 1973:

Phyllis' father, Richard Prouse, bought an old violin in a pawn shop, in Wellington, for £2 as Phyllis remembered it. It was a Migini violin, made in 1744 or 1874 - should only really remembered it was 17 something. It had a gorgeous tone. She remembered a visiting violinist (Leo Chairnafski was the phonetic spelling she used) playing it.

Phyllis believes that Kate (Nessie Williamson Prouse's sister?) had it, but that it never came back to the Prouses after Kate's death.

The Migini was dull and uninteresting, without polish or fancy trim.

Shared note

In her divorce papers, Phyllis said that she stopped living with Trevor on 27 November 1953 ("I remember that date clearly").

Shared note

Phyllis filed for divorce on 21 November 1972. On 13 December 1972, Phyllis and June drove the person from the court to Maramarua, where they served Trevor with the papers. He was working at Carter Timber Merchants (a timber mill) at Maramarua.

Summary of Phyllis E. Taylor's notebook relating to support from Trevor Taylor:

Phyllis Taylor kept a notebook that recorded details relating to her relationship with Trevor Taylor, as well as financial notations relating to upkeep and also some other property type transactions that happened through the years.

Though the first notes refer to 1949, it appears many were not made necessarily at the time. The details for the early years, in particular, were probably made later, and perhaps as she was trying to sort out matters prior to divorce in the early 1970s. The book itself would tend to support that.

12 December 2013

Auntie June (June Taylor Wills) just told Averil Jarlov the story of Phyllis - June's mother, Averil's grandmother - cutting bottles. When times were bad and there weren't enough jars for canning and preserves, she would wind a piece of wool around a bottle and soak it with meths. After lighting it and letting it burn a short while, she would put the bottle into cold water - and it would snap off. They used sandpaper to smooth the edges. A glue was made from flour and water to fix a piece of white paper over the preserves. They had to scrounge even for the white paper - June said that often they would get a piece wrapped around a loaf of bread - a 'barracuda' loaf - if they bought any (they usually made their own).

Letter from Phyllis to Cuffie Tunnington, 22 May 1973

Phyllis wrote shortly after returning from Levin, following her brother Allan Prouse's death. Allan had left Beryl his old Holden car. Cuffie had apparently been left a camera. Phyllis felt it may have been Allan wanting to make amends. Cuffie had asked Phyllis about what Ohakune had been like when Cuffie's mother (Phyllis' sister) Grace had lived there in the early 1900s, but Phyllis had little knowledge or recollection. She also discussed matters relating to Taihape and Mangaweka. Discussed an Arthur Silk, maybe associated with Silk, Smith and Somebody Stables. "His wife somewhat buxom aimed at refainment (sic), she it was who complained to Jess & Mabel & Grace that the servant girl had pushed thPhyllis Elizabethe pram up her back passage, which she had polished only that morning (Bland expressions were held under greate pressure.)" Father Le Croix appears to have fathered a child with Tina's sister "Aunt Liz", the child being named Felice (the Father's christian name being Felix). According to Tina, Liz was later required to repay in a like manner, taking a child of some other woman and a priest. That child was named Hinemoa.
