Shared note

Joseph and Mary Hodgson were married in 1840 at Waimate and lived at Auckland and on Waiheke Island (B Tattersall in "The Prouse Connection"). Joseph was born in England, the third son of a Lancashire business man. He was trained as a veterinarian and was on a trip when he met Mary. They were married on 5 Nov 1840 at the Mission Station in Waimate. Joseph became in turn a farm manager at Pararake, a butcher (the first in Auckland) and then living on Waiheke Island started a firm of ship owners and wood and coal merchants. He purchased 125 acres on the Island in 1868. His sons carried on the firm. The family became prominent in yachting. (from "The Prouse Connection") |
