Military Record: Enlisted at Newburgh, Orange County, New York
on 17 September 1861 in Captain Conklin's Cavalry
Company, 56th New York Volunteers, which subsequently
became Company "D", 1st New York Mounted Rifles on
January 1, 1862.Was promoted first to Corporal on
March 19, 1862, then to Sargeant on September 14, 1862
and finally to Commissary Sargeant in January of 1863
and was discharged at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on
September 17, 1864 upon expiration of service.

Obituary:
William Judson, an old and respected resident of the village,
and a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home on Main
Street last Sunday morning, after a long illness, in the 76th
year of his age. He was born at Colderham, Orange County
January 14, 1836. His parents were Andrew and Margaret
McGregor Judson. To them were born ten children - seven sons
and three daughters, all deceased except John, living in
St. Cloud, Florida and one daughter.
As a young man William learned the trade of carpenter and
later worked in hard woods, becoming an expert, and upto
the time of his giving up work last fall was considered one
of the best workmen in this section of the state. As one of
his co-laborers says" He was the best benchman I ever knew".
In the early days of the Civil War, William and his six
brothers enlisted in the Union Army - a record unparalleled.
William enlisted in Company D, First New York Mounted Rifles,
September 3, 1861 and the others later on. They saw active
service and all but one of the seven came back. After serving
three years William re-enlisted and served to the close fo
the war. During his last enlistment he was detailed tothe
commissary department and stationed at Norfolk, Va.
On January 19, 1870, he was united in marriage at Paterson,
N.J. to Miss Bertha DeHart of Goshen. They lived in Paterson
for several years and then came to Goshen where they have
since resided. Mr. Judson is survived by his wife and three
children, Miss Loretta L. & Frank E. of Goshen and MayH.,
wife of A.S. Brower of High Bridge, N.J.
Mr. Judson was a menber of the F.M.Cummins Post, G.A.R.
and at one time was Commander.
The funeral will be held from his late residence Wednesday
afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be under the directionof
Major Murray Camp, S. of V. Interment in the family plot in
Slate Hill Cemetery.
