In the 1880 Waller County Agricultural Production report, William Hegar is shown as owning his own farm. He had 40 acres of tilled land. He had 400 acres of woodland and another 160 acres of unimproved ‘old fields’ not growing weeds. His land was valued at $2,000, and his farming machinery at $200. He had $2,000 worth of livestock. In the prior year, he spent $100 for repairs or new buildings. He paid $100 for 20 week’s labor from colored labourers. He produced about $540 of value in the year from his farming. He had 60 horses. He planted 25 acres of Indian corn and produced 300 bushels. He planted 15 acres of cotton and produced 4 bales. He had 1 acre of molasses cane and produced 80 gallons. He produced 15 bushels of Irish potatoes. He had 1 acre of sweet potatoes and produced 15 bushels. He had 25 bearing peach trees. He cut 20 cords of wood, valued at $20. |
