Stories from Corinne Ogg Wallingford (?) (The story refers to Grandpa, so not sure if this came direct from Corinne?), collected by Joan Wallingford Mickler: When they visited Grandpa Hegar, he told her not to wear her red sandals. Grandpa Hegar (Alfred) once phoned Roland and said he had to go downtown that day. Roland was working nights; so he didn't even go to bed, but drove to Post Oak road to pick up Grandpa, then downtown. When he got back in the car, Grandpa said, "If I hadn't paid my taxes today, it would have cost me another 50 cents." It was typical of Roland to jump to do any favor requested of him and to never let on that it was a problem. It was typical of Grandpa to pinch every penny. Another day Grandpa had Roland take him to the bank in Tomball to get money. Roland said Grandpa came out looking around nervously like a "bank robber." He shoved the money into his pocket and told Roland that he felt safer with him than with anyone. |

Conversation with Frances Williamson and Madelyn Hegar, Summer 1989, from Joan Wallingford Mickler: When he was living on Post Oak, he would walk to the Katy highway to visit his friend at the service station. One day he was hit by the train. His clothes were dirty and torn and he threw them away so no one would know. Someone who was at the station later told Aunt Maye about the accident and that when they went to help him, he was already getting to his feet and saying, "All right God damn it! If you are in such a hurry, go on!" He grew flowers way out in his fields on Post Oak. He would periodically pick a bouquet for a visiter or for the house. He liked to try new varieties of plants. During WWII, Roland worked at the shipyard on the night shift. One day Grandpa called to ask if he could take him to town the next day. Roland arrived home from work and without any sleep drove to pick up Grandpa and take him to town. Grandpa came out of the courthouse and said, "I sure am glad I got here today or I would have had to pay $1.00 more." When Alfred died he was buried in the Hegar cemetary. It was cold and raining. Roland left Corinne and the kids at home. The wagon got stuck going out to the cemetary so Roland and the others carried the casket through knee deep mud to the grave. When they tried to lower the casket, the grave was too little, so they had to get down in the hole and shovel it bigger. After Roland got home he kept worrying about whether they had turned the casket around and left Grandpa facing the wrong way. According to German tradition, the head should always face ________. |
