From: "Connell" <rconn@@magicnet.net> Subject: [GEIGER] Harriet GEIGER BARBER~Harriet JONES GEIGER On the 1860 New River/Bradford Co., FL, census, the Harriet, age 20, in the Isaac BARBER family, is his wife Harriet GEIGER, dau. of Joshua GEIGER (s. of Abe and Mercy) and Mary Ann LEWIS. My notes on her say: "On the 1850 Nassau Co., FL, census, she is listed in parents' family as age 10, born in FL. In the 1860 Starke, New River/Bradford Co. census, she is in Family No. 282: Isaac BARBER, 25, farmer FL; Hariet, age 20, FL, no children." Their children were Joe, Henry and Ellen. Isaac was a son of the famous Mose BARBER; this family was written about in the book "Florida's Frontier - The Way Hit Wuz" by Mary Ida BASS BARBER of Kissimmee, FL - which was about the terrible post-civil war BARBER-MIZELL feud. In the book, it was said that Martha GEIGER who marr. Archibald BARBER (another son) was Harriet's sister, but Mary Ida now agrees that she was her second cousin -the dau. of J. Martin GEIGER (s. of Felix and Mary) and Emily JOYNER. The Battle of Olustee (near Lake City, FL) was fought across Harriet and Isaac's plantation. According to the book, he was away in the war, so she dealt with it alone, turning her home into a hospital of sorts for injured of both sides." On 1860 Alachua Co. census, the Hariett called age 16 in the John Martin GEIGER family is Harriet JONES (b. 1844), the wife of his son Noah GEIGER. My notes say: "The 1860 Alachua Co. census shows at Waldo, Family No. 3: John M. GIEGER [sic], age 63, farmer, R.E. $6,000, P.E. $20,000, b. GA; wife Emily, age 56, b. GA; Pliny, age 17, b. FL; Anson, age 15, b. FL, attending school; Noah, 21, farm laborer, P.E. $100, b. FL; Harriet, 16, b. FL; Simeon SWIFT, 46, farm laborer, b. Me. [Anson was my great-grandfather] "The 1870 census shows Noah GEIGER living at New Troy, LaFayette Co.: Fam. 109 GERGER (sic), Noah, 35, Farmer, R.E. $400, P. E. $2,000, b. FL, voter; Harriett, 30, b. FL, cannot read or write; Laura, 10, FL, cannot read or write; Jane, 9, FL; Louisa, 7, FL; Martin, 5, FL; John, 3, FL; George, 2, FL. He lived between his parents and his widowed sister, Mary JONES. When his father died, Noah took over as administrator, in his mother's stead. "His gravestone in the Santa Fe Cemetery says 'Noah GIEGER (sic), b. Sep. 14, 1839 - d. Mar. 24, 1901,' Inscription illegible, Masonic emblem on stone. Top says 'My Husband'. "Harriett's application in 1907 for a civil war widow's pension gave her maiden name as JONES. Her stone, next to husband, Noah, says 'Hariett B. GEIGER, b. June 22, 1844 - d. Feb. 8, 1931. Here I lay My Burden Down, Change The Cross Into The Crown.' Top of stone says 'Mother'." I don't yet know the kinship between Noah's wife and Mary's husband. And something else puzzles me ..... buried almost between Noah and Harriet is "Maxwell N. GEIGER, Apr. 10, 1864 - Jan. 31, 1902," who almost surely is their son (Harriet's grave is turned toward him). But he isn't with them on the 1870 census. His will calls him Maxwell Noah GEIGER, a merchant at Waldo, names his wife and children, and names one of his witnesses as "Harriet P. [sic] GEIGER". And as Forrest Gump would say, that's all I have to say about that! Anne C. Hi, Seeking anyone with information on SWIFT families from Oxford County, Maine. Unfortunately township is unknown. My fourth Great Grandfather, Simeon David SWIFT was born approx. 1814. According to the muster roll for Captain S. Whitehead's Company, Regiment of Florida Mounted Volunteers, has the following: Swift, Simon(sic) D. b. Oxford, ME 5'10 fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, carpenter. According to another muster roll from Florida, Simeon was in FL before 16 June 1837. Any help in finding his family would be appreciated. Jason Haydon ID: I78878 Note: He arrived in FL prior to July 1837 when he was mustered in to service in Florida. Served multiple times in multiple ranks, as well. Also served in the confederacy during the Civil War. He and his wife divorced around 1850. No record has been found of him after 1870. |
