Sue Bethany Guinn was born November 3, 1925 in Bryan, Texas to Grace Morgan Bethany and Claude Melnotte Bethany. Family lore has it that she was the first baby born by Cesarean Section in Brazos County. Sue was born into heaven with our Lord and Savior on August 9th. Her mother Grace was an active homemaker. Her father, C.M. was the Principal of Bowie Elementary school and known to his students as Professor. He was an Elder and active member at the First United Methodist Church. Sue grew up in Bryan, attended SFA and graduated in 1942. She graduated from Southwestern University with a BA in English in 1947 where she was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. After graduation she worked at Texas A&M as a secretary in the Civil Engineering Dept. Later, she and her children moved to Denton and in 1969 earned a MA in Library Science and Spanish with a Teaching Certificate from North Texas State University. She then continued her family’s tradition of educating and working with children as a Librarian in Bryan Public Schools, becoming Head Librarian of the new Bryan High School in 1972 until she retired in 1990. Sue’s passion was teaching kids by introducing them to books and how to use them in their studies. She supported, encouraged and/or worked with her students in such a way that many former students would come up to her and say hello, exclaiming they would never forget her. Sue always had a bright smile and a wave for whoever crossed her path and was interested in just about everything. Her lively curiosity was evidenced by her passion for collecting books. Moving to Houston in 2004 she settled into the Clarewood House Retirement Community, making many friends and livening up the place so much they made her the President of the Residents Association. Sue married in Bryan in 1952 to David C. Guinn (deceased) a Consulting Engineer in the Oil and Gas Industry. She is survived by 2 children who both grew up in Bryan: a daughter Susan, a Consulting Petroleum Engineer married to Yocel Alonso, an Attorney from Sugarland, TX, her 2 grandsons, Adam of Los Angeles, CA and Danny of New Orleans, LA; a son David II, a Project Manager for a Petrochemical Co. married to Terri a Music Teacher, and a granddaughter Emma of Portland, TX. Sue is also survived by numerous, loving cousins, nephews, nieces and many dear friends. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Sue’s companion Barbara Reed, the staff of the Clarewood House and the faithfulness of the Neighborly Class at FUMC. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Wednesday August 13 at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Visitation will also be at 9:00 AM on Thursday August 14, with services following at 10:00 AM at the First Methodist Church Bryan with the Rev. Rick Sitton officiating. Dr. Carroll Fancher will officiate at the Gravesite in the Bryan City Cemetery. Published The Eagle August 13, 2014 |
