William was a farmer at Wainuiomata. He was drowned in the Otaki River in 1878 when returning to his home after visiting his sons at Whenuakura, Taranaki. He had purchased section 45 of 180 acres at 45/- per acre off the end of Hukatere Road at an auction on 10 Apr 1873, being one of sixteen successful bidders. He tried unsuccessfully to purchase other sections up to the time of his death. Unfortunately his two sons died young, William in 1881 and Richard in 1884, so the land was eventually passed into other ownership. A great-grandson (Thomas) owned section 146 of 73 acres in the same block at the corner of Kaharoa and Parsons Roads until about 1961. The family retained farming interests in the Wainuiomata and Taranaki districts, then gradually moved away to Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and Auckland and spread their skills to trades and professions. Many had wider civic interests and a few showed sporting prowess. from "The Prouse Connection" |
