He went to school at Fields Store, a little one room school house. The family moved to 618 W 25th Street, Houston, Texas when Ed was quite young. Ed then went to Helms School located in the heights. While attending Helms School he worked at a drug store delivering drugs on his bicycle. At age 12 he started working during the summers at H.A. Burden’s dairy on Fulton Street where he met Thelma Burden age 9. At age 17 Ed worked with a pipe line crew surveying a pipe line from Texas through New Mexico. At age 18 he went to work for Houston Lighting & Power Company as a meter reader, later as inspector. August 29, 1930 Ed and Thelma were married. On August 30, 1931 a son, Richard Eugene Campbell, was born to Thelma and Ed Campbell. In 1934 he went to work as deputy sheriff for Harris County. He worked some with the U. S. Marshall transporting prisoners to other states. In 1937 he joined the Texas Highway Patrol and moved to Tyler, Texas, then to Lubbock, Texas, then Beaumont, Texas. He then moved back to Houston. He served 15 years with the Department of Public Safety – 9 years as a highway patrolman, one year as investigator, 6 years as a Texas Ranger. On October 12, 1950 son Richard Eugene Campbell, age 19, married Joyce LaVerne Coleman, age 19. In 1952 Ed worked one year for Rose Truck Lines as Supervisor of Transportation. Some sources give his middle name as Caldwell, but Carl seems more likely as one that he used through his life. |

Christine Ogg recorded the marriage location as Grandfield, Louisiana. I've not been able to find such a place or valid alternative. |
