Amanda and Alexander were divorced in September 1841 at Lewis Co., Kentucky; Amanda filed petition for divorce and stated that Alexander owned land on the Ohio river in the upper end of Forman's Bottom of 130-200 acres, with a brick house in Vanceburg. She also stated that her father, Thomas Bragg had left her land on the Ohio River near Vanceburg where her widowed mother lives with some slaves. Alexander in his answer, states they met as children by accident and a trivial incident attached them to one another until they arrived at maturity and were married. In the deposition of Henry C. Bruce, taken March 22, 1842, says he is the son of the plaintiff (Amanda) and that he left home six years ago. He has a brother, Thomas Bruce. Thomas J. Bruce in his deposition says that three of Alexander and Amanda's sons are well able to support her. The divorce was granted and the estate was divided. Other persons giving depositions for the proceedings were: (1) Volney Bragg who was living in Missouri 1842. (2) Lucy Bragg, on June 1, 1842, says her husband, Thomas Bragg, who was the father of Amanda Bruce, died upwards of 20 years ago, leaving his widow and seven children. (3) Stephen V. Bliss, who stated he had lived in Vanceburg since 1832. (4) Benjamin F. Torrance said he had known Alexander Bruce since 1835 or 1836. Lucy Bragg reported to the court that Alexander Bruce purchased a slave of George N. Davis, who was the husband of Harriett Davis, late Harriet Bragg, one of the heirs of Thomas Bragg dec |
