Her tombstone reads "Lucy Blakemore Bragg was born April 8, 1764 in Frederick Co., Virginia and married to Thomas Bragg Sept. 20, 1781 and died in Lewis County, Kentucky, Nov. 1, 1862. Ninety eight years old, with a mind clear and brilliant to the last." ** IMPORTANT ** December 3, 1911 Dear Cousin Maude; Your long looked for letter was received. I was so glad to hear from you and your family. It is over one year since I heard directly from you, I wrote one year ago last August asking you if Cousin Mary McGee was still alive and if you could find out where she lived in Los Angeles as I was going as a Delegate of C.S.S.A. Convention, my daughter took very sick and did not go, but I see you have been so very busy having two weddings in your family. Well wish Bertha (Lewis-James) and Sallie (Lewis-Poppleton) health happeniness and prosperity. It was hard to have Sallie go so far, but you have dear Anna Mary (Lewis) with you. Cousin, sometime soon have yours and her photo taken and send me a copy. I would appreciate it. I met Bertha's husband at Fire Clay (Carter Co., KY)when Willie (James) and I was introduced. If I knew then he would someday be a cousin, would have tried to remember him better. Yes, Elizabeth Hertel wrote me all about that delightful visit she had. Her sister Anna is at home visiting her mother. We are enjoying beautiful weather-in fact- too fine for unless we have rain soon the crops and stock will suffer. Well Calif. men have given to their women the ballot and now study clubs and lectures are in vogue- for me all I want to make good. We still have some pretty roses in the garden yet.--A large red rose and La France - we have in Calif. an abundance of flowers- all the year different varities in the different seasons. Well I suppose you would like to know how I have succeeded in helping Florence Bryson out. So, I will write it out for you, but will use Anna Mary's (Lewis) name and when it comes her turn to join the DAR, she will know all that I do I received besides your letter asking for information one from Lucy Bryson and Jimmie McConnell. Which I have answered as I had the BIBLE with the Birth's, Marriages and Deaths of all the McConnell family. I was able to give the correct birth, marriage, and death of Grandmother, Great-grandmother and father besides being able to trace as far as GEORGE WASHINGTON's own AUNT who was our great-great-great grandmother. In come things I am a little hazy for instance I do not know how many children Grandma BRAGG had but think 2 daughters; one married a Lewis and the other a BRUCE. I was so young and age has slipped my memory. When I was about 14 years old, I visited my cousins in Lewis Co., KY, the BRUCES and the REDDINGS and stayed 3 weeks with grandma BRAGG. I was there on her birthday--99 years. The dear old Lady was blind, but pleasant company. She loved to talk about the REV. WAR and about GEORGE WASHINGTON, her mother was his aunt (I think Anna Mary, but I have forgotten if she was his father's sister or mother's; do you know?) She had a wonderful memory. She said she was 8 years old at the time of the (REV)War. Washington was at home very often, she would sit in his lap while he would talk to her mother. Her 2 brothers was in the war. Her brother, George Bruce was one of GENERAL WASHINGTON's Staff officers and served during the whole war. The Civil War was in full blast at that time (of my stay)and I asked her what side would WASHINGTON would be on; north or south if he were still alive? She said, "Honey, dear- BRO. HENRY (BRUCE) says I must not think about this (Civi)war, but to you I will say, "The way old VA goes; that is the ways GEORGE WASHINGTON would go." I must stop writing for I am sure you are tired and besides it is late, but do not be so long writing to me for I love to hear from you and Anna Mary. You know my thoughts are often with you and the memory of that night sitting on the front porch with the stars shining down on those white tomb stones where my Dear mother lie sleeping and at rest. It always seems wonderful she would find her resing place at her own mother's home. Give my love to all my cousins, tell Robert (POPPLETON) his name sake is quite a builder and contractor now--working hard. He has built many houses since I sent him the photo of his first home. Please excuse all mistakes. The electric lights are too high to make letter writing a success. I forgot to say that I have rented my house and I am living with my daughter in one of her flats. With Love and Best Wishes, Sallie M. K. Anna Mary Lewis is the Great-grand-granddaughter of Mrs. Lucy Bragg who lived and passed to spirit life in Vanceburg, Lewis Co., KY at the age of 102 years. Mrs. Lucy Bragg's mother was General George Washington's aunt and the great-great-great-grandmother of Anna Mary Lewis, and the 1st cousin to Miss Lucy Bragg who was a little girl of 8 years at the time of the REV WAR. Her two brothers fought thru the was. Her eldest-GEORGE BRUCE was one of GEORGE WASHINGTON's staff officers and served under him. Mrs. Lucy Bragg's daughter, Miss Elizabeth Bragg married Mr. Charles Nelms Lewis of that family. Lewis Co., KY was named for their family before they moved to Carter Co., KY and settled on a farm three miles from Grayson. Mrs. Elizabeth "Betsy" Bragg Lewis had a large family of sons and daughters; Harvey, Robert, Milton, Charles Nelms II, Lucy Bragg Lewis McConnell, Sidney Lewis Ward, and Adilade. Nelms Lewis married Miss Louisa Ann England. you know how to finish better than I the mistakes I have made-please correct them and if serious notify Florence (Bryson) Also, I would like to know. |
