According to his obituary, he came to Ohakune in 1905, attending school there when Mr. J. Bligh was the headmaster. He worked for his father in the production of the Ohakune News, and later in Raetahi for the Waimarino Call. In later years he worked for the Central Districts Press, which went out of print in 1950. He was also involved in a carrying company, a store and a bakery. He was one of the earliest members of the Ohakune Fire Brigade, and for many years president of the Waimarino Brass Band. He served two terms as a councillor and was mayor for two terms, being the youngest mayor ever at the time of his election. Five years before his death he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Not long before his death he became the Waimarino representative on the Wanganui Hospital Board. He had been a member of the advisory board for the Plunket Society for 20 years. |
