Freda,
For years, we (Stacey researchers) believed that he died in the war. Actually, it was his brother, William Wesley Stacey, who died at Columbus, MS. on 05 Jun 1862. He was a member of Sengstak's Battery (D) of the 2nd Ala. Light Artillery.

Notes on William Henry:

May 14, 1863. Monroe County, AL. Marriage Book A, pg. 235.
William H. Stacey and Sophronia Ross were married by consent. The ceremony was conducted by John M. Greene, J.P. Security was signed by Mathew Lambert.

July 08, 1863.
William Henry Stacey enlisted in Co. G, 7th Ala. Cav. at Claiborne and paid 40 cents per day for use of his horse.

June 13, 1900 U.S. Census, Household 182, Beat 12, Midway, Monroe County, AL. Supervisor's District 1, Enumeration District 168, sheet 10A.

W. Henry Stacey, 72, born Alabama April 1827, lived with his son, John, 32, born Alabama February 1868. Pat Gallagher, 5, born Alabama January 1895, and Maggie Gallagher, 3, born Alabama March 1897, are recorded in the home as children of William Henry Stacey.

Note: The children belong to Emma Stacey and James Gallagher. Emma was raised as the daughter of Jesse Stacey, W.H. Stacey's brother. Probably, she was the daughter of William Henry Stacey and Sophronia Ross. W.H. Stacey and Sophronia Ross were divorced by 1867 when she married Blasingame Hamilton. More research is needed to determine the parents of Emma Stacey.

...

The Ross sisters who married Stacey brothers were the children of John R. Ross and Martha Miranda (sometimes Marinda) Thames.
