The following was extracted from the pension records by descendant Lucille Mehrkam, AAFA Charter Member #032 (Member of AAFA Hall of Fame) State of Texas County of Harris I J. P. Alford do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension to be granted me under the Act passed by the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved Mch 26, 1909. I enlisted and served in the military service of the Confederate States due the war between the States of the United States, and that I did not desert the Confederate service etc; I was honorably discharged on about the twenty seventh (27th) day of May AD 1865 - war over. that I have been a bona fide citizen of the State since prior to Jan. 1, 1880. I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are turn.
Signed. J. P. Alford Affidavit of Witnesses State of Texas County of Harris. Before me A. E. Amennam, County Judge of Harris Co. appeared P. C. McKee and E. T. Etheridge. Stated they in Army at the same time and knew J. P. Alford. Signed 8th June. 1912 Conf. Records show that Pvt. John P. Alford joined Capt. John R. Kennard's Grimes Boys, Nelson's Regiment Texas Infantry at age 17. Joined at Anderson, Tx. on 13 Nov. 1861. Mustered into service He is listed on the Roll of Prisoners of War paroled and sent from Camp Douglas, Ill., May 13, 1863 and delivered at City Point, Va. 21 May 1863.
