Story from Beryl Prouse Jarlov collected by Nick Wallingford, June 2007:

Beryl's father spent some of his teenaged years living in Fiji. His father was the editor of a newspaper there.

In the middle of a flu epidemic, his father struggled home, feeling really bad, and had to slowly climb a long set of stairs.

He was thinking to himself that he felt as bad as anyone could feel - until he saw them carrying a dead body out of the house.

He immediately gathered up the family and got on the next boat back to New Zealand.

Story from Averil Jarlov, 12 October 2008:

Beryl Jarlov and Auntie June (both daughters of Trevor) took Trevor's ashes in the cannister up to the Twin Kauris, on the road to Whitianga, Coromandel, New Zealand.

Beryl had a posthole digger, one of the type that you twist around and around to dig a small hole. They put the cannister in but did not mark the exact location - just that every time family members pass the Twin Kauris, they say "There's Granddad's grave" or some such.

Shared note

When he was young, Trevor was a swimming champion, winning silver cups. He used to swim in Lake Horowhenua in competitions.

Shared note

June Taylor Wills believes her father Trevor worked at one time at the agricultural testing station outside of Levin.

June Taylor Wills, 24 December 2012:

Trevor was living at Kopaki, near Taupo, and she said he was after the many timber slabs that had been left after the timber milling. He planned to re-cut them for sale, but she says he talked too much, and others got in ahead of him.
