Story from Beryl Prouse Jarlov collected by Nick Wallingford, June 2007: Beryl's father spent some of his teenaged years living in Fiji. His father was the editor of a newspaper there. In the middle of a flu epidemic, his father struggled home, feeling really bad, and had to slowly climb a long set of stairs. He was thinking to himself that he felt as bad as anyone could feel - until he saw them carrying a dead body out of the house. He immediately gathered up the family and got on the next boat back to New Zealand. |

Story from Averil Jarlov, 12 October 2008: Beryl Jarlov and Auntie June (both daughters of Trevor) took Trevor's ashes in the cannister up to the Twin Kauris, on the road to Whitianga, Coromandel, New Zealand. Beryl had a posthole digger, one of the type that you twist around and around to dig a small hole. They put the cannister in but did not mark the exact location - just that every time family members pass the Twin Kauris, they say "There's Granddad's grave" or some such. |
