According to June Taylor Wills, Gertie appears to have been somewhat pushed to the side by the rest of the family. She has been described as somewhat naive by one relation. Another story has it that Christina Prouse sent money regularly to ensure she was able to stay in Christchurch, rather than being up on the North Island and closer to the rest of the family. She did not appear to come to Christina's 90th birthday, though all the other surviving sisters were there for the event. |

She attended Whitemans Valley School in 1891. On 31 August 1891 she entered Levin School. She was there for 1892, 1893, 1895, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900. She left Levin School on 31 May 1900. |

Letter from Phyllis Prouse Taylor to Christobel Nation Tunnington, 17 December 1981: Phyllis describes Gert's personal garden (each girl had their own?). It had a primrose, an old fashioned pinkish colour with fancy edges. Phyllis remembers it in flower 1916-1917-1918 and earlier in 1907-1910. At the back of the bush, northeast corner, was a belt of big, high pine trees. The ground inside this belt for about 15 foot was very poor. Then there was bush scrub - whitey wood, pampas, coprosma, punga, bramble, native orchids. Some pseudo acacia had been planted but never did very well. It was in this scrubby stuff on the corner that Gert had her garden, with a punga at one side. |
