Shared note

The child was born in theh King George V Hospital, Rotorua. She lived only a matter of hours. R.G. Phillips-Turner was the medical attendant/doctor. The birth was premature. The informant was John McDowell, undertaker from Rotorua.

Shared note

Lived for only a day or so according to family stories. The family also says that the mother, Phyllis, wanted to name the child "Fern", but the father, Trevor, did the registration and gave the mother's name Phyllis Elizabeth instead.

Shared note

Averil Jarlov remembers going to the Crematorium at Rotorua (Sala St) and seeing a plaque that commemorated Fern.

Shared note

Averil Andersen-Jarlov and Nick Wallingford took June Taylor Wills to the Sala Street cemeter on 11 July 2009 to try to find the grave. June says that her mother Phyllis Prouse Taylor had the cemetery staff raise the small stone somewhat as it was getting covered up. June and Beryl did much the same at a later date. We did not find the stone on this date, as it may be covered again. June said it is quite small (200mm square) and pretty much flush with the ground. When you walk out of the doors of the chapel and turn to your right toward the burial area, June remembers it as being relatively close (ie, not far back to the right where other older graves are) and close to the line of graves closest to the chapel (ie, not back toward the servicemens' graves).

And when June went to the Cemetery with the staff, they were able to find the stone - halfway between the water faucet and the curved memorial stone near the entrance area.

Shared note

Fern was born in the King George V Hospital, with R. G. Phillips Turner as the attending medical staff (doctor?).

Shared note

June Taylor Wills said that her mother Phyllis was sick for much of the pregnancy. June's father, Trevor Taylor, was working to build a dam near Whakatane/Edgecumbe and would only come home on the weekends, covered with tar. The family was living in Rotorua by this time, up near the top of Ranolf Street. The children attended the Catholic School nearby.
